Basis Technology Supports Cambridge-Somerville Asian Festival, Mural Creation
Opens headquarter complex to festival and sponsors mural painting by Nepali artist during Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month
SOMERVILLE, Mass. June 3, 2022 — Basis Technology announced its major sponsorship of the first day of the first Cambridge-Somerville Asian Festival on May 20, 2022 at its Somerville headquarters. The festival centered around a live mural demonstration by Somerville-based Nepali street artist/muralist Sneha Shrestha, aka, Imagine (imagine876.com), and Massachusetts-based, Taiwanese-American activist, comics illustrator Shaina Lu (shainadoesart.com) who led a zine-making workshop for adults and children.
“Our company’s roots are in enabling software for Asian languages, so we were thrilled to have the opportunity to support the local Asian-American community and also make a space that celebrates modern Asian art year round, not just in May,” Carl Hoffman, CEO of Basis Technology said. “It’s serendipity that the Nepali characters in Ms. Shrestha’s art echoes the multilingual text analytics that is our core business, and expresses beautifully our company ethos of valuing diversity.”
The two-paneled mural by Ms. Shrestha appears at the entrance to Basis Technology, featuring the third clause of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (“Everyone has the right to life, liberty and the security of person.”) in Nepali.
“It takes a village to put on a festival that is 100% volunteer-run,” Nina Farouk, lead festival organizer said. “It’s not an overstatement that this mural and the first day of the festival would not have been possible without Basis Technology’s tremendous support in sponsoring the mural and generously opening its doors to the festival. We hope other companies follow Basis Technology’s lead and step forward to uplift the Asian-American community.”
About the Cambridge-Somerville Asian Festival
The Cambridge-Somerville Asian Festival was held May 20-21, 2022. Its aims are to highlight the diversity of heritages within the Asian American community, and provide a positive anti-racist vision through exposure to Asian arts, music, food, community leaders and more. This event is an opportunity to bring communities together to both celebrate our cultures and ethnicities and counter anti-Asian American sentiment in a positive way. The festival was organized by a collaboration of the Cambridge Families of Asian Descent (CFAD), Pan Asian Club (PAC) at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, Asian Educators Resource Groups (Asian ERG) and Somerville Asian and Asian American Family Network (SAAAFN), rallying together the voices of Cambridge and Somerville families, students and educators.
