Jo Ann Barefoot
Jo Ann Barefoot is CEO of Barefoot Innovation Group, Cofounder of Hummingbird Regtech, Senior Advisor to the Omidyar Network, and host of the podcast show Barefoot Innovation. A noted advocate of “regulation innovation,” Jo Ann is Senior Fellow Emerita at the Harvard Kennedy School Center for Business & Government and is writing a book on financial innovation and regulation.
Steve Cohen co-founded Basis Technology in 1995 and oversees the firm’s business operations. With his engineering background, Steve seeks to move the dial on real-world problems by finding achievable waypoints between academic thinking and production-grade technology. In the mid-90s, Steve recognized a common need among major search engines—Infoseek, Lycos, Google, Yahoo!—and led the company to develop its first text analytics products. With the success of these products, the company started building AI applications for mission-critical operations for national security. Steve is now working to bring the technology developed for the US Intelligence community back to the commercial sector for risk management and opportunity building applications.
Jonah Crane is a strategic advisor to financial technology startups, helping them stay ahead of regulatory change as they scale. Jonah is also Regulator in Residence at the FinTech Innovation Lab in New York, and Executive Director of RegTech Lab in Washington D.C. Jonah previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary and Senior Advisor at the U.S. Treasury Department, and as a policy advisor to Senator Chuck Schumer. Before joining Senator Schumer’s staff, Jonah was a corporate attorney focusing on mergers and acquisitions at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP in New York. Mr. Crane received a J.D. from New York University School of Law.
Joe Sutherland is an expert in leading groundbreaking data science initiatives. A career in technical and operational roles at venues including The White House, VC-backed fintech ($20m), Columbia, and Princeton help him to represent both the front and back offices. He has extensive experience deploying production-grade machine learning architectures on cloud-based stacks with various database infrastructures. His academic research, published in top peer-reviewed outlets, leverages predictive modeling on structured and unstructured data to make behavioral inferences. An avid coder, he manages open-source software ranked in the top 1% of projects on GitHub. PhD, MPhil, and Masters at Columbia; Bachelors at Washington University in St. Louis.
Evan A. Schnidman, Ph.D. is Founder and CEO of Prattle. Before starting Prattle, Evan taught at Brown University and Harvard University. Co-author of How the Fed Moves Markets, Evan is also widely published in macroeconomics, political economy, and finance publications. Along with being a respected academic, author, and researcher, Evan is also an experienced consultant for large corporations and financial institutions.
Matt Van Buskirk
Matt Van Buskirk is Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Hummingbird Regtech. Hummingbird aims to give superpowers to the people fighting financial crime.
