Update the main RJ dictionaries

The dictionaries that RJ uses are the shareware dictionaries, EDICT, ENAMDICT and KANJIDIC, of Prof. James Breen. In order for these dictionaries to be used with RJ, they first must be processed into the format that RJ expects.

There are two ways you can update your RJ dictionaries:

  1. Processed: The dictionary files listed below, WAEI.DCT and KANJI.DCT, have been updated and processed by us.

You may download these processed files directly from this website. (All files are in "ZIP" format. You must have "unzipping" software to access the files. Visit the PK Ware site for PKunzip shareware.)
    Download options:

Dictionaries were last processed by us on 06/25/2001 , using the files off the pub/nihongo site with the dates:

      EDICT    06/15/2001
      ENAMDICT    06/22/2001
      KANJIDIC    05/22/2001

  2. Unprocessed: You may obtain and process updated copies of the dictionaries yourself at any time by visiting Prof. James Breen's pub/nihongo ftp site and downloading the dictionaries directly. After downloading the dictionaries from pub/nihongo, use the "Upwizard.exe" included with your RJ purchase (in the directory labeled "Update Dicts") to process the files. Follow the directions in the Online Help titled "Obtaining and Integrating New Dictionaries".

Add an additional dictionary

The following dictionaries have been created by various sources and are redistributed freely here, with permission. Please be sure to read the copyright notices included in each ZIP file.

The files have been processed so that they may be easily integrated with RJ. Alternately, you may obtain, process and integrate a file yourself by transferring the file from Prof. James Breen's pub/nihongo ftp site, processing the file according to the RJ Help instructions, and adding the DCT file to the list in the RJ Configurator.

Instructions:
  1. Transfer one of the files below by clicking on the link
  2. Unzip the file
  3. (Read the copyright notice)
  4. Place the DCT file in an appropriate directory (typically, the same directory as WAEI.DCT)
  5. Open RJ, go to the Configurator (Options menu), select the "Dictionaries" tab
  6. Type a semi-colon (;) after the last entry in the "Pathnames of Japanese-to-English Dictionaries" box and
  7. Enter the path of the additional dictionary
  8. Close and reopen RJ
