Can I open my own documents in RJ?
Yes, you can directly open any text formatted document, such
as .TXT or .HTML files. You may also copy and paste text from
other Windows applications, including web browsers and e-mail readers.
Can I look up characters as I would in my paper
kanji dictionaries, like Nelson's®?
Yes, in RJ you can search for characters by reading, radical
(bushu) and stroke count, similar to as you would in
Nelson's® (except it's faster with RJ!).
Is there any way to save words and characters that I want to reference later?
Yes, you may save any number of words and characters in the
built-in, personalized "Study List".
Is there a Mac or Unix version of RJ?
No, there is no Mac or Unix version and we do not currently
have plans to make versions for these operating systems.
However, RJ might run on Virtual PC and other Windows
emulators but this has not been tested.
Do I need a Japanese operating system or Japanese extenders on my English system to run RJ?
No, RJ runs on any language version of Windows without special extenders.
Is there an English-to-Japanese version?
We currently do not have an English-to-Japanese version, and
do not have plans to make one at this time.
Can you ship RJ to Japan?
Yes, we can ship RJ via express mail and regular Air Mail.
Express mail takes two days to arrive in Japan, regular Air
Mail takes approximately 10 days.
How large is the RJ download?
Read Japanese 2.1 is 6.3 Mb
How much disk space do I need for RJ?
RJ require about 12 Mb of disk space
Can I read Japanese text that appears on paper?
RJ reads only electronic text, and cannot read text directly
from paper. However, there are two indirect ways to read text from
paper with RJ:
(1) run the paper through a scanner and use OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) software on it (the Japanese OCR product is a separate
piece of software available from companies such as Necor and e.Typist).
(2) look up the characters using RJ's Search menu items.
Can RJ read scanned text?
RJ cannot directly read text that has been scanned. But, if the scanned text is
subsequently processed through OCR (Optical Character
Recognition) software, RJ will be able to read it.
Can I read text directly in my web browser with RJ?
You cannot click on characters directly in your web browser
to view meanings and pronunciations. But you can copy text
from the web browser and paste it into RJ to read it.
Is RJ an automatic translation system?
No, RJ is not an automatic translation system (sometimes
called "machine translation"). RJ is a word-by-word
translator, that aids you in determining the correct
translation of sentences and paragraphs.
Do I need to know katakana or hiragana in order to use RJ?
No, the RJ interface is entirely in English. There is the
option of viewing Japanese pronunciations in kana, but
this is not required.
