L.L.BEAN LAUNCHES JAPANESE WEBSITE USING GLOBALIZATION SOFTWARE AND SERVICES FROM BASIS TECHNOLOGY

—  L.L. Bean Relies on Basis Technology’s Solutions to Deliver its Award-Winning E-Commerce Site to Japanese Customers  —

Cambridge, MA, June 12, 2002Basis Technology, the leading provider of software globalization solutions, and leading outdoor gear and clothing manufacturer and retailer L.L. Bean, today announced the launch of a Japanese version of the L.L. Bean website, www.llbean.co.jp, built on IBM’s Websphere e-commerce platform and globalized with the help of Basis Technology’s software and engineering services.

Basis Technology began the project by working with the site’s development team to internationalize the website’s domestic code base. Basis Technology then completed a wide range of localization projects that enable L.L. Bean to offer Japanese customers the same experience as customers using the English-language site. Additional requirements fulfilled by Basis Technology included: creating an interface so L.L. Bean’s Japanese third-party order fulfillment partner could process Web orders; adding pronunciation database fields so that customer service representatives could properly pronounce customer names; adapting the site to support Japanese Web browsers; modifying the online payment system to support Japanese payment methods; and integrating the company’s Rosette Japanese Language Analyzer into L.L. Bean’s industry-leading catalog search function.

“We are very excited about the launch of our Japanese-language e-commerce site,” said Zane Shatzer, Managing Director Japan Branch Office at L.L. Bean. “Japan has always been an important market for us, and we are pleased that our many Japanese customers now have a site that speaks to them in their own language. Basis Technology’s outstanding globalization work and our partnership with IBM enabled us to offer our Japanese customers a website that mirrors the look and feel of our US site, but which seamlessly handles the many functional differences required to properly support Japanese e-commerce. The result is a site which we feel confident will continue our tradition of providing top-notch customer service whether delivered in our stores, through our paper catalogs, or on the Web.”

Carl Hoffman, Basis Technology’s CEO, said, “We are proud to have played a part in this launch. The successful completion of this project has further added to our expertise in the globalization of popular retail websites. Our philosophy is to act as a true partner who can understand a client’s overall brand strengths and strategy for market expansion and incorporate that vision into the work we produce. We are very pleased to help bring to the Japanese market a site which truly extends L.L Bean’s reputation for quality and customer service.”
