GOOGLE INTEGRATES BASIS TECHNOLOGY’S C2C WITH CHINESE SEARCH ENGINE

Cambridge, MA, April 9, 2002—Basis Technology (www.basistech.com), a leading provider of globalization solutions, today announced that Google selected Basis Technology’s Chinese Script Converter (C2C) to expand its Chinese offerings. C2C provides an OEM solution for conversion between Simplified Chinese (used in mainland China and Singapore) and Traditional Chinese (used in Hong Kong and Taiwan).

“Google integrated Basis Technology’s linguistics software to enhance Google’s pan-Chinese search engine,”said Susan Wojcicki, Google’s director of product management. “Chinese search is important to Google’s global audience and our goal is to help these users find the information they’re looking for quickly and easily.”

“We are pleased that Google continues to turn to Basis Technology for their linguistic technology,”said Steve Cohen, executive vice president of Basis Technology. “We look forward to working with their team to introduce leading-edge services using C2C.”

Chinese script conversion is essential for bridging the gap between the two written versions of the Chinese language. This conversion is linguistically sophisticated, requiring accurate text segmentation to determine what words are present, and correct mapping between the characters used to represent those words in each script. To complicate the problem further, many Simplified Chinese characters can map into one of several Traditional Chinese characters, depending on context. Built upon Basis Technology’s leading Chinese text segmentation engine, C2C provides highly accurate translations in real time.
