Highlight Language Analysis Suite
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Defense Intelligence Agency
(DIA), together with Basis Technology, have partnered to eliminate
the difficulties in transliterating names of foreign persons and
places into Intelligence Community (IC) standards. Through a
multi-year program, licenses to the Highlight language analysis
suite are available to all IC elements.
Keeping Transliterations Consistent and Names Straight
Translation between Arabic script languages and other languages is hard enough
without having to wrestle with the technical details of file format or hunting for the
correct spelling of foreign names — a time-consuming task, but vital for an accurate
translation.
Basis Technology has developed the Highlight language analysis suite to tame the
language and computer complexities of Arabic-script languages.
-
Transliteration
Assistant With this plug-in, the user can highlight
a Romanized Arabic, Dari, Farsi, or Pashto name in a
Microsoft Word or Excel document and convert the name to its
spelling in the native script or the standardized
transliteration (Romanization) in any of several
transliteration standards. Within the tool, access an
Arabic-English dictionary, word lists, gazetteers (place
name databases), and the CIA’s Chiefs of State database with
a click of the mouse. Highlight allows for “fuzzy” searching
and the ability to upload agency unique glossaries or
reference names.
-
Arabic Editor This easy-to-use text
editor for Microsoft Windows permits the input of Arabic text using a standard
keyboard layout. Suitable for typists from linguistic experts to beginning
Arabic students. Save plain text files to the desired encoding: CP1256,
ISO-8859-6 or Unicode.
-
Geoscope Map Viewer This map viewer lets
the user verify the spelling of geographic features in the Middle East or see
where they are located.
