CEO and Chairman

Carl founded Basis Technology in 1995 to help American companies enter Asian markets. In 1999, the company shipped its first products for website internationalization, enabling Lycos and Google to become the first search engines capable of cataloging the web in both Asian and European languages. In 2003, the company shipped its first Arabic analyzer and began development of a comprehensive text analytics platform. Today, Basis Technology is recognized as the leading provider of components for information retrieval, entity extraction, and entity resolution in many languages. Carl has been directly involved with the company’s activities in support of national security missions, and works closely with analysts in the U.S. intelligence community. Prior to starting Basis Technology, Carl worked as an independent consultant in Boston, New York and Tokyo to international clients in finance and knowledge management. Carl spent eight years on the research staff of the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. He is an active contributor to several non-profit organizations, including the Free Software Foundation, the MIT Alumni Fund, and the Unicode Consortium.

Steve is responsible for worldwide sales and the planning and operations of Basis Technology’s linguistic product research and development. Before starting Basis Technology with Carl Hoffman, Steve was engineering manager for Cognex Corporation’s Tokyo office and development manager for SMT device inspection. He has also consulted on software internationalization engineering and developed software for embedded systems and electronic test equipment. Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT and studied at Waseda University in Tokyo.

Benson provides technological leadership at Basis Technology. With the R&D team, he breaks ground in new technologies for the company’s core products and incubator projects. In custom solution projects, he works with customers, rapidly grasping their specific needs and then setting direction and strategy to meet those multilingual challenges. Prior to Basis Technology, Benson held technical and management positions at Kendall Square Research, Symbolics, Object Design, and Honeywell Information Systems. He is also an active contributor to the open source software community as a member of the Apache Software Foundation and a Project Management Committee member of Apache Mahout and Apache CXF. Benson holds a degree in computer science from MIT.

Daphne oversees the finance and accounting operations and provides overall financial vision for the company. Daphne has extensive experience working with senior executives to improve the bottom-line, grow revenue and achieve strategic objectives in the technology, financial services and consumer products industries. Prior to Basis Technology, Daphne held various financial management positions at Fidelity Investments, iCAST Corporation and Toshiba America Information Systems. Daphne holds a BS in business administration from National Taiwan University and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She is a licensed CPA in the state of Massachusetts.

Chris leads the U.S. Public Sector team at Basis Technology, working with government customers to meet their text analytics and digital forensics mission needs using Basis software and services. He holds a BS in Mathematics from the US Naval Academy and an MS in Computer Science from the University of Maryland. After flying with the US Navy as an F-14 Tomcat RIO (Radar Intercept Officer), Chris founded a sales-enablement software company and then worked delivering Public Sector solutions with search and database software at Verity, Autonomy, MarkLogic, and MongoDB.

Brian leads the digital forensics team at Basis Technology, which builds software for incident response, digital forensics, and custom mission needs. He is the author of the book File System Forensic Analysis and developer of several open source digital forensics analysis tools, including The Sleuth Kit and Autopsy. Brian has a Ph.D. in computer science from Purdue University and worked previously for @stake as a research scientist and the technical lead for their digital forensics lab and incident response team. Brian is the chair person for the Open Source Digital Forensics Conference (OSDFCon) and on the committees of many conferences, workshops and technical working groups, including the Annual DFRWS Conference and the Digital Investigation Journal.

Dave joined Basis Technology in 2005. He leads the engineering team responsible for text analytics including existing products and new technology initiatives. He has been building natural language processing systems since 1998, including positions at Unveil Technologies, Zoesis, Wildfire Communications, and iConverse. He has a B.S. in computer science and a B.A. in computational and applied mathematics from Rice University and a Master’s degree in computer speech and language processing from Cambridge University, U.K.

VP General Counsel

Amy is responsible for overseeing Basis Technology’s worldwide legal affairs and manages the company’s legal and human resources departments. Since graduating from Boston University, Amy has had a successful career spanning more than 17 years in the legal, academic and business worlds. Prior to joining the company in 2005, she held positions at Harvard Business School, as an associate at Goodwin Procter, and as the Assistant General Counsel for a Massachusetts-based publicly traded company. She has worked with companies ranging from start-ups to Fortune 500 firms, and is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
